Don't Let a Small Chip Turn Into a Big Problem
That little chip you got driving behind a gravel truck on I-27 or Highway 87 might not look like a big deal right now. But in West Texas, it is. Here's why: heat and cold cause glass to expand and contract, and a chip provides the perfect weak point for a crack to start spreading. On a hot Lubbock summer afternoon, a small chip can turn into a 12-inch crack in a matter of hours.
The smart move is to fix chips immediately — before they spread. And the great news? If you have comprehensive auto insurance, your chip repair is almost certainly covered with no out-of-pocket cost to you. Texas law actually encourages insurers to waive deductibles on windshield repairs, since a $50 repair prevents a much more expensive $400+ replacement claim later.
We can usually complete a chip repair in 30 minutes or less, at your location. Call us, describe what you've got, and we'll tell you right away if it's repairable or if you're looking at a replacement.
What Damage Can Be Repaired?
A good rule of thumb: if the damage fits under a dollar bill and isn't directly in the driver's primary line of sight, it's likely repairable. Here are the types of damage we can usually fix:
Bullseye Chips
Circular impact damage from a rock or debris — the classic "target" shape. Very common on Texas roads and typically repairable.
Star Breaks
Cracks radiating outward from a central impact point, like a star. Usually repairable if the legs aren't too long.
Half-Moon Chips
Partial bullseye, crescent-shaped. Similar to a full bullseye — generally straightforward to repair.
Short Cracks (< 6 inches)
Short linear cracks may be repairable depending on location and depth. Call us — we'll assess it honestly.
Combination Breaks
Mixed chip and crack damage — often repairable. We inject resin into all damaged areas.
Hail Pitting
Small surface pitting from hail that hasn't fully penetrated the glass may be improvable, though severe multi-point hail damage often requires replacement.
How the Repair Process Works
Windshield chip repair is a specialized process using professional-grade resin — not a DIY kit. Here's what we do:
- 1. Clean & prep the damage. We remove any loose glass particles and moisture from the chip. Moisture in the repair is the number-one cause of repair failure, so we take time here.
- 2. Inject the resin. Using a specialized applicator, we force optically clear resin into the damage under vacuum pressure. The resin fills every crack and void in the damage.
- 3. UV cure. We expose the resin to ultraviolet light — Lubbock sun is great for this — which hardens it to a solid, clear bond.
- 4. Polish & finish. The surface is polished smooth. The result: restored structural integrity and significantly improved appearance. The chip may still be faintly visible, but the glass is solid again.
Why Chips Are So Common in Lubbock
Lubbock has a few things working against your windshield. Agricultural trucks hauling cotton, grain, and equipment on Highway 87 and County Road 1585 scatter gravel constantly. Loop 289 sees heavy commercial truck traffic. I-27 connects Lubbock to Amarillo and runs through open ranch country — long stretches where debris goes unnoticed until it's already on your windshield.
College students at Texas Tech parking in surface lots along University Avenue and 19th Street also deal with rocks and debris from those lots regularly. And during West Texas dust storms, blowing grit and sand can cause fine surface scratching over time, weakening the glass and making it more vulnerable to impact.
If you're driving in Lubbock regularly, a chip or two per year is pretty normal. The key is addressing it immediately — and letting your insurance pay for it.
Chip Repair Is Often 100% Free
If you have comprehensive auto insurance — the coverage that handles non-collision events like hail, theft, and flying debris — your chip repair is very likely covered. Texas is a competitive insurance market and most insurers waive the deductible for chip repairs entirely, because the repair is far cheaper than a replacement claim later.
We'll verify your coverage when you call. If it's covered, you pay nothing — we bill your insurer directly. If for some reason your chip repair isn't covered, our cash prices are very competitive. Either way, it's worth a five-minute phone call.
